Sourdough Hamburger Buns
Sourdough Hamburger Buns are another bakery item I was just tickled to be able to make myself. Mine were a little on the small and puffy side. I’ll know to flatten them out a bit more in the future, but they were nice and fluffy and tasted wonderfully. I’m also going to make a half batch next time because 20 is way too much for one person to deal with!
Learning to Knit
I tried learning to knit a few years back. I didn’t find it as easy to pick up as crocheting though and got discouraged. But now that I’m raising angoras and thinking of growing some cotton soon both of which I can spin into yarn, I find it more important to learn this more yarn efficient craft.
This week one of my net friends sent me the Stitch ‘N NaughtyWord book to help with my goal of learning to knit this winter, so I’m back on the horse. I’ve been taking my time doing dishcloths and frogging them over and over again for practice. My stitches are already starting to even up.
Berry Dumpling
I have more stovetop goodness to share with you. This time it’s a pie made from this Strawberry Dumpling recipe I found. 1/4 recipe made a hearty “slice” for one. I made it using mixed berries I found in my freezer rather than the fresh strawberries called for. Although I’m looking forward to making it with fresh strawberries from the garden. It may not be very impressive looking, but it tasted absolutely amazing!
Starting Ginger
I got a big hand of ginger last week to use in juices. This is what I had left when I read an article about starting ginger by keeping it damp in a pot. Not sure if there’s any good growing tips left since it doesn’t tell me what to look for, but it’s worth a shot
So I plopped it in a pot this week and if it doesn’t grow I’ll just throw another hunk in next time I pick some up.
Frugal Friday – Hot Chocolate Mix
On my old blog I had made an annual post about the joys of homemade hot chocolate, so I’m going to continue the tradition. This is a great way to save money and warm up at the same time. I like to make up a mix of the dry ingredients so I don’t have to measure out everything every time I want some.
1/3 cup nonfat dry milk
1/2 tbsp cocoa powder
1 packet stevia (or 1 tsp sugar or sweetener of choice)
1 cup boiling water

Continuous improvement
I had yesterday off and spent some time working around the house. This morning I find myself looking back and wishing I’d accomplished more over the long weekend. Sure, I did the minimum…finishing my chores and a making a few meals with enough leftovers for my lunches during the week. But there was so much more I wanted to do. Could have done. Had energy to do but didn’t.
A big part of that is the amount of time I spend on the computer. As a professional computer nerd, the internet and computers in general are a built-in weakness of mine. Some of it is research and updates but most is just time wasted.
This point of this post wasn’t to whine about my failings, but to identify a place I could improve. There’s always something for everyone to work on and this is the time of year most of us are thinking about them. I’ll need all that spare time if I want to accomplish all of my goals in the upcoming year. So although I’ll keep the blog and myfolia updated, you’ll *hopefully* be seeing less of me around the rest of the internet as I work on this area of improvement.
One thing that will help me with this is the fact that my sound stopped working after moving the furniture yesterday to vacuum. After poking at it and not seeing anything obvious wrong, I stepped back and I decided not to try to fix it. Although I stopped watching tv some time ago (and don’t get any reception..yay!) one of the time waste-y things I did was watch a couple shows on hulu. Now I can’t
Cathead Biscuits and Vegetarian Gravy
My inspiration for homesteading started a blog recently at Frugal Homesteads. It’s already full of a surprisingly large amount of great information. And when she posted a stovetop biscuit recipe I had to try it right out. I made a half batch to fit in my little 8 inch cast iron skillet and whipped up some vegetarian gravy to serve with it.
The biscuits come out big and fluffy and the new to me gravy recipe was thick and tasty. What a wonderfully warming lunch on this chilly winters day.
